6 Smartlook Alternatives for Web and Mobile in 2027

Compare six Smartlook alternatives for web and mobile, with costs, hosting tradeoffs, and a practical test before you switch.

Reviewed 4 October 2026.

Disclosure: we develop UXWizz. We include it where it fits and explain its limits, including the lack of native mobile app replay.

Smartlook's final platform shutdown is scheduled for 30 September 2027. The right replacement depends on what you used Smartlook to do. Watching a website checkout, measuring product activation, and investigating a native app crash need different capabilities. Start with the workflow you need to keep, then compare the cost of running it.

Smartlook alternatives at a glance

This shortlist groups tools by use case. It is not a ranking of replay quality.

Tool Hosting Main use case Cost model and main tradeoff
UXWizz Self-hosted Website analytics, heatmaps and replay One-time license plus infrastructure. You maintain the installation; no native app replay.
PostHog Cloud Product events connected to web and mobile replay Usage billing after a free tier. Events and recordings have separate limits.
Microsoft Clarity Microsoft cloud Free hosted heatmaps and replay No software charge. Check retention and whether its reporting covers your existing workflow.
Mouseflow Cloud Website conversion and form analysis Free and paid plans. Session, website and feature allowances vary.
UXCam Cloud Mobile app behavior and issue analysis Custom quote by session volume. Confirm your framework and required features.
Splunk DXA Splunk cloud Experience analytics linked to observability Confirm the package and price with Splunk. The transition requires a separate implementation.

Mobile website recording means recording a browser on a phone. Native mobile replay means recording screens inside an iOS or Android app. A tool that supports the first does not automatically support the second.

Has Smartlook already closed?

Smartlook is winding down, but its published platform shutdown date is 30 September 2027. New paid sales ended on 31 May 2026, and renewals and expansions ended on 31 August 2026. Paid subscriptions end with their existing terms, no later than 31 August 2027. These are separate deadlines in the Cisco end-of-life notice and Smartlook transition FAQ.

Check your own expiry date before scheduling a replacement. Our Smartlook shutdown and data export guide explains what to save and how to plan the handover.

1. UXWizz: self-hosted website analytics

UXWizz fits teams that want website stats, heatmaps and session replay in one installation. It also supports goals, events, segments and JavaScript error tracking. The dashboard and database run on infrastructure you choose.

This makes it worth testing if you used Smartlook to investigate website behavior and want control over storage, retention and backups. You can evaluate a real signup or checkout journey through the free trial.

The Solo license costs US$299 once and includes one year of updates and support. Renewal is optional. Licenses have no per-website, per-visitor or per-recording charges, but server capacity still limits what you can collect and retain. Include hosting and maintenance in your budget.

The main limits are operational responsibility and platform scope. UXWizz requires a compatible PHP/MySQL stack; see the hosting requirements and managed hosting option. It records websites, not native app screens. Its goals and events also do not establish that every Smartlook funnel or retrospective event definition has a direct equivalent. Test the reports you need before committing.

2. PostHog: product analytics with connected replay

PostHog is a strong candidate when you need to move between product events, funnel drop-off and the sessions behind them. Its replay product supports web and mobile integrations, including iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter.

At the review date, PostHog's monthly free allowances include one million analytics events and 5,000 session recordings. Additional use is billed by product. Standard replay retention is one month on the free plan and 90 days on pay-as-you-go; longer retention has separate plan conditions.

Evaluate both the analytics and replay budgets. A free event allowance does not mean every session can be recorded for free. Set collection rules and billing limits, then test identity handling and the event-to-replay workflow on your actual SDK. The product has a broader scope than a simple website heatmap tool, so allow time to configure it.

3. Microsoft Clarity: free hosted heatmaps and replay

Microsoft Clarity is a useful starting point if your main task is to watch visits and inspect heatmaps without a software subscription charge.

It also has native mobile SDKs. Microsoft's support table lists framework differences and capture limits. Check the SDK version, UI framework and screen types you use instead of treating every mobile integration as equivalent.

Clarity's standard recording retention is 30 days, with longer retention for selected recordings. It is a hosted service, so it does not meet a requirement to keep the analytics database on your own server. Rebuild a report you use today to check whether its events, funnels and filters answer the same question.

4. Mouseflow: website conversion and form analysis

Mouseflow suits website teams that investigate checkout abandonment, navigation problems and form friction. Its platform combines replay, heatmaps, conversion funnels and form analytics.

The free plan lists 500 monthly sessions, one website project and one month of retention at the review date. Larger plans change the session, website, funnel and retention allowances. Check the plan that includes the specific analysis you need, rather than assuming every feature is in the entry plan.

For a trial, follow one failed form submission through to the recording and the funnel report. Check dynamic fields, validation errors and your payment flow. This is primarily a website choice in this shortlist; native app replay needs separate SDK evidence.

5. UXCam: mobile app behavior and technical issues

UXCam is worth evaluating when Smartlook's native app recording was central to your work. Its mobile analytics product combines replay, heatmaps, funnels and technical issue analysis, with support listed for native and hybrid frameworks.

It also offers web analytics, so it should not be described as mobile-only. Still, its mobile workflow is the reason to include it here.

UXCam's pricing page offers a trial and a custom quote based on monthly sessions. Request a quote for your real traffic, retention and access needs. Test a difficult screen and an issue you can reproduce; confirm that the relevant app version, session and technical context are available together.

6. Splunk Digital Experience Analytics: the Cisco transition path

Cisco names Splunk Observability Cloud RUM plus Digital Experience Analytics as the migration direction in its end-of-life notice.

Splunk Digital Experience Analytics connects replay, funnels and journeys with Real User Monitoring. Consider it when your team wants to link a conversion problem to application performance and already needs that observability workflow.

Smartlook says that neither subscriptions nor historical data transfer automatically. Treat this as a new deployment, and confirm the commercial package, instrumentation, platform support and access requirements with Splunk. A team that needs only website heatmaps may prefer a smaller setup.

Turn your Smartlook setup into a replacement test

Make a short list of the questions your team answers in Smartlook. For example: "Why do visitors start signup but fail to complete it?" This is more useful than a feature list with six identical replay checkmarks.

For that signup question, write down:

  1. What counts as starting. Is it opening the form, entering the first field, or sending a request? Record the current rule and URL or screen.
  2. What counts as completion. A click on Submit can happen even when signup fails. Prefer a confirmed successful outcome when that is the metric you need.
  3. How steps are joined. Record whether the report follows a session or a person, whether order matters, and the allowed time between steps.
  4. What you need to investigate. Can you open the relevant failed journey, see the error and understand the user's next action?

You might name the new events "signup_started" and "signup_completed", but matching names does not guarantee matching counts. Recreate the meaning first. If Smartlook derived an event from an existing recording, check whether the replacement can do that or needs new instrumentation. Data collected after installation cannot recreate visits that were never captured.

Compare the complete cost

Use expected collection volume, not just total visits. As an illustration, 50,000 sessions with 20 collected events each produce one million events. Recording every one of those sessions is a separate requirement from retaining the event totals. This is a calculation example, not a measured customer result or a vendor quote.

For each shortlisted tool, price the required recordings, events, websites or projects, retention, team access and export access. For self-hosting, add infrastructure, backups, maintenance and update costs. For a quoted service, ask the vendor to state these limits in the quote.

Set pass conditions before the trial

Use the same representative journey in each candidate. Include a successful outcome, a validation failure and a mobile device or native screen where relevant.

Before removing Smartlook, verify new production collection and save the old reports and available API data. Keep the two collection periods labelled. Sampling, session definitions, time zones and consent can make totals differ during an overlap; investigate the reason rather than forcing the numbers to match.

Questions about replacing Smartlook

Can I import my old Smartlook recordings into the new tool?

Do not assume a report or session API export is a portable replay archive. Confirm the export format and playback requirements with Smartlook, then ask the replacement vendor whether it can import that exact format. Test a sample. Our export guide separates reports, API data and playable recordings.

Is there a free Smartlook alternative?

Clarity has no software charge. PostHog and Mouseflow have free allowances with different limits. Compare collection, retention and the reports you need; "free" alone does not establish feature parity. UXWizz has a free trial and a paid one-time license.

Is UXWizz suitable for former Smartlook users?

Yes, for website teams that need analytics, heatmaps and replay and can run a PHP/MySQL installation. It is a poor fit if native app replay is essential. Start with the UXWizz demo, then use the free trial to check your website journey before choosing a license.
